Harmony Venture Partners provided a team from Botswana with the opportunity to discuss a new Facebook development offering a novel community cellular network solution.
Harmony Venture Partners took the Botswanan delegation, which included the Consul General and the head of the Botswana Development Corporation to Facebook’s Menlo Park headquarters to learn about the UC Berkeley’s Technology and Infrastructure for Emerging Regions (TIER) group, which developed the initial technology that has become Facebook’s offering for building rural cellular networks. It is now possible to deploy a community cellular network, empowering everyone, everywhere to run their own cellular networks. Community cellular enables locally-owned, small-scale, independent cellular networks, run by and for rural communities. The Facebook team showed the contingent from Botswana how they are helping emerging countries solve the last mile problem to remote communities with technology and local entrepreneurship.
